The Utah Avalanche Center is hiring a Forest Service avalanche forecaster for the 2023/2023 season. The position is a temporary seasonal GS-8, meteorological technician position. This position is a 1341 meteorological technician; however, it is an avalanche forecasting position.
Work will be limited to no more than 1039 hours and will last from approximately early November to late April. The duty station will be Salt Lake City.

This position is assigned to the Utah Avalanche Center in Salt Lake City and reports to the Avalanche Center Director. The Avalanche Center collects field data on mountain snowpack and weather, creates a daily avalanche advisory for the Central Wasatch Mountains (during winter months), and teaches both professional and recreational avalanche courses.
The successful incumbent will be an expert in mountain weather and avalanche forecasting, will have experience writing public avalanche forecasts, and will have many seasons of experience working, traveling, and acting as an operational decision-maker in adverse mountain environments via skis and snowmobiles. He or she will also have strong written and verbal communication skills, fine attention to detail, and project management experience. The position requires proficiency with Microsoft Office and other common computer software programs and requires some internet technology skills. Hourly pay for this position starts at $23.74/hour, and the employee will be eligible for health benefits.
