Snow Characteristics
Snow Characteristics Comments
Happy to find a hard freeze of the upper 30+cm of the snow pack. Surface softened as anticipated with warming temps and sunny aspects throughout the day. Boot penetration was never more than ankle deep aside from the occasional random posthole at a shallowly buried bush.
Comments
Snowpit in the LZ at 6700ft showed 90cm of basically isothermal snow, wet all the way down, 1F snow below the P hard refrozen upper 30cm. In a NNW facing pit around 8100ft, we found refrozen top 30-40cm, with F or maybe 4F wet grains in what was the drought facets for the 60cm below that (didn't dig deeper than 1m). The Cutler Headwall has 6 or 8 size 2 slides from Ben Lomond to Willard Peak in the gullies, in keeping with the very warm temps last weekend. All of these looked to be several days old.
