Location Name or Route
Rattlesnake Canyon, Wellsville Mountain Wilderness

In east and southeast facing terrain, the surface snow was moist and the crust under it was supportable until mid-afternoon when it softened and became breakable in places. I could see icy pillars and clusters of large rounded grains in the moist weak snow (rounding faceted snow) under the crust.

In north facing terrain, thick layers of very loose faceted snow exist both above and below a deteriorating 2 or 3 cm thick, brittle rime-crust.
