Comments
We left Tibble Fork at 3:00 pm and climbed the Deer Creek trail and ascended the middle ridge in the Temptations, following recent skin tracks. We could see descent tracks also on the ridge to the east, also south facing. Due to the recent warm weather, there was a half inch sun crust under some scattered surface graupel. At 5:00 we dug a quick test pit on south facing aspect at 9500 feet, 26 degrees. Temp was 37 degrees. We didn't dig too deep, only about three feet. The snow profile was very uniform all the way down, all recent storms, becoming denser the deeper we went. The last few shovel fulls felt like slicing styrofoam, felt very dry and consolidated. 6 inches down from top was 4 fingers, bottom of the pit withstood fist strikes. Of course no PWL at that elevation facing south. The crust was stiff on descent and the lateness of the day and the overcast skies firmed up the descent dramatically from what the sunny afternoon likely offered.
