Weather
Weather Comments
Mostly clear skies the last two days with colder temps this morning. Winds were consistently light to moderate in the mid elevations, moderate at the high elevations gusting to strong. The NW flow was cranking hard this morning as low as 8000ft between 4 and 5am but then reduced considerably after that.
Snow Characteristics
Snow Characteristics Comments
Snow surface through midday was nearly all varieties of firm at the mid and upper elevations, with a healthy surface freeze. Crampons of some kind were a good idea. Surface was soft enough to ride below 8000ft or so between 11am and noon depending on aspect, but I wouldn't be surprised if the high elevations were icy and firm all day with the wind and cooler temps.
Red Flags
Red Flags Comments
A pocket of wind slab exists at the high elevation here and there, but things are pretty locked in. There were a couple new wet slides from earlier this week on the Willard side of the headwall, and a loose wet on the skier's right side on the Ben Lomond end. No new avalanche activity noted in the last two days.
Comments
Skinning now starts at the luge/Refrigerator Canyon; the road is pretty much all gravel. The headwall below Willard is starting to get pretty bony as well, with talus peeking through the snow surface.
