Our Week in Review highlights significant snowfall, weather, and avalanche events of the previous week. (Review the archived forecasts for the Salt Lake mountains.)
The danger roses for the Salt Lake mountains from Friday, March 19 through Thursday, March 25:
Summary:
Friday, March 19: Clear skies with increasing winds ahead of a cold front that arrives over the weekend. Only minimal wet-loose avalanche activity is reported.
Saturday, March 20: Moderate to strong winds from the southwest as a cold front enters the region during the afternoon. Storm totals of 6-12" are reported by the end of the day, with the highest amounts in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Widespread sluffing in the storm snow is reported, as well as a few shallow soft slabs.
Sunday, March 21: Continued snowfall overnight and into Sunday, with additional instability-driven snow showers during the day. By the end of the day, storm totals are 12-24", with the highest amounts in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Continued widespread sluffing in the storm snow on steeper aspects, with some sensitive small, shallow soft slabs, such as this shallow soft slab in Mineral Fork that broke out 8" deep and 100' wide. Monday, March 22: Increasing clouds with moderate west/northwest winds. Other than continued sluffing in the storm snow, avalanche activity included the Ant Knolls and another shallow soft slab in White Pine Canyon: [Nat Grainger photo]
Tuesday, March 23: No backcountry avalanche activity reported, however an increase in east/northeast winds, especially at the upper elevations. Former director of the UAC - Bruce Tremper - provided an observation from Mineral Fork that nicely-summarized the wind-drifted snow.
Wednesday, March 24: Clear skies with increasing clouds during the afternoon. Moderate winds from the southwest. No backcountry avalanches reported.
Thursday, March 25: Cloudy skies and light snow showers, with continued moderate winds from the southwest. No backcountry avalanches reported. Storm totals of 1-3" are reported by the end of the day.
