clouds were moving in and out a fair bit today. I was a little worried about greenhousing as a result, but that didn't seem to happen, with mushiness only on the expected aspects, not on the north.
Comments
I was skiing old tracks and windslab with the few new inches on top and was feeling pretty happy, but I did do a quick hand pit at a bit over 10,000 feet -north facing - and was surprised when a pretty good slab came out quite easily at 20" down. I tried it a couple of times and got the same results, so I decided to stop at 10,500 on a 33/34 degree slope instead of pushing up the last bit to >11k and 38 degrees (that also potentially represented cross-loading) keeping in mind the problems that folks had over the last few days with "small" windslabs. Probably woulda been fine, and no doubt other folks likely did that with no problems today, but with a surprising amount of snow late last week and a surprising amount of weird wind over the last few days.... (see windslab photo along the lines of Mark and Nikki's pic posted today that indicates the weird winds of late).
I feel compelled to add this: As I was skinning up a somewhat exposed - but smallish - bowl 3 folks were booting up a steep line nearby. Though I was in full view of them and they could have continued booting another 50 vertical feet to the ridge top, they chose instead to traverse a very steep, wind-hammered slope directly above me, "just getting to that little pass". I immediately bailed down out of the way. See pic. Another good reminder that there are people crawling all over these mountains, and our actions affect the safe travel of others.
