Comments
This was a learning experience and luckily no one was hit by debris although the debris did slide to an area where 2 skiers were skinning up but they were out of the immediate slide path. The avalanche was a small cornice that was kicked off. I skied over the cornice on the lower side of it which in analyzing it was not the smartest choice but since I was just going down the ridge at the time the danger was not apparent to me. Luckily it did not slide at that time, a second skier then followed me about a min afterward and skied down the cornice in its center, this is what triggered the cornice and it avalanched and flowed about 50 ft down the slope without triggering anything else. No one was hurt or buried in this avalanche but I wanted to report it so that people can learn from it and be aware that even when something does not seem consequential it can be. It's important to be aware of your surroudings and communcate this with your group as well as others.
