Like Trent said yesterday in the ob from this zone, it definitely felt funny being in steeper Northerly terrain today, didn't think we'd be here this year. Probed a lot on the skin up, snowpack is 180-200cm deep everywhere I checked on N-NE aspect 8k-10k' elevation. This storm cycle delivered 7-11" of new snow generally, increasing with elevation, everything but N has a crust under the new snow. Skies were overcast with occasional fog/low clouds, light snow most of the day up to S1. Temps felt warm at the trailhead but stayed cold at ridges.
Winds were mostly calm today from the N, no snow transport was observed and the trees were holding snow so it wasn't windy last night here. A few moderate gusts knocked snow off trees, but that was all we saw. The top 50 vertical feet before hitting the ridge was a little slabby, but not enough to feel like a storm slab, just a little cracking when you stomped on the top side of a switchback in the skin track. This is likely due to minimal compaction during snowfall with E winds. Hand shears just indicated dry loose. The steepest NNE slopes had a little natural dry loose activity, turns in steep terrain could get a bit of dry loose moving, but nothing to be worried about in our terrain.
Riding was best above 9k' NNE where the crust isn't really present, but a drop in elevation and easterly aspect change reminds you where it is quickly. Still great riding. When the sun comes out and it clears things will change quickly of course.
