Comments
The temperatures were overall cooler today than yesterday, but the thin cloud cover leads to some green housing in Mineral, leading to a warm and wet tour. There were obvious signs that southern aspects had gone through a wet cycle, especially at lower elevations. Large pinwheels and drainage channels were visible. The snow surface was wet at lower elevations and remained damp even up to about 8000' on a NE aspect. I saw no new signs of wet activity during the tour, other than a very large pinwheel that came down into the skin track between the time of ascent and descent. I would expect to see more wet activity over the next few days, and even on the lower and maybe mid-elevations on Northerly aspects that began getting damp today.
Another thing of note, the snow depths in Mineral are still shallower than the core Wasatch (upper LCC and BCC). At 8500', on an N aspect, the height of snow was 150cm (approx 5 feet). The weak faceted snow at the ground has primarily gone dormant at this point, but if we get another large snow event, knowing that mineral is still much shallower would make me concerned about it, and similar periphery zones. I did not dig down to see if the facets at the ground were damp, but I can assume the warm temperatures will continue to help this issue though.
