Comments
Decided to head out to West Bowl this morning to see the effects of the last wind event. No recent avalanche activity was observed in Silver Fork or Days Fork. There were a few medium sized wind pillows scattered along the due north part of the Silver Fork Headwall. No other evidence of significant wind on the Emma’s, Days Fork or West Bowl was noticed. Looking across to snowbird, the peaks were scoured bare in some spots. This confirms that higher elevations were impacted by strong winds. Surface snow is faceting on most aspects, which probably contributed to the better than expected ski conditions. No cracking or collapsing noted when venturing off the skin track.
Dug a few snow pits on a sheltered northwest facing aspect above Hideaway Park at 10,000ft. HS is about 80-85cm. Snowpack is in various stages of faceting with two distinct weak layers at 35cm and 55cm from the ground. November crust layer has mostly broken down. Results of the two extended column tests I performed were ECTX and ECTN27; which broke on the November facets without propagation. When I pulled on the back of the column with my shovel I did get a clean sheer 35cm from the ground.
Bottom Line
-
Stability tests are starting to show fewer in your face warnings, but the snowpack structure is still very poor in most areas I’ve been traveling in
-
Areas with a slab that hasn’t decomposed yet are most suspect
-
A high degree of spatial variability is making stability assessments more complex
