Comments
New snow from the last storm has settled into a dense and almost damp layer. Temperatures were quite warm this morning compared to the last few mornings. Winds were cranking throughout the morning and moving some snow in open terrain. Experienced two very faint collapses on the more east facing aspect of red pine trees at about 9,500ft.
Dug a snow pit on a north facing slope at about 9,500ft. Total snow height was 80CM. Was surprised to see that the snow was quite a bit less faceted than other pits I have dug in the last few weeks. We performed two extended column tests but did not get propagation on either test. Was pretty surprised by these results because two days earlier I had a large collapse and crack on a similar slope just 150 feet away. I don't believe these results are an indicator of a strengthening snow pack. While prying on the column the snow did fracture cleanly at the crust/facet layer where most observers have been reporting propagation.
