Problem #1 Comments
Faceted "sugar" forms predominate just below 2" of "storm" snow at 8800' along N and NW aspects b/w upper and middle Wolf Canyon just off the well traveled Lightning Ridge of Powder Mtn. A pencil hard layer sits 2/3 down the shallow 30cm snowpack. No cracking or significant compression test result in 2 test pits though wind deposits on the all north-related aspects from moderate/strong over night SW winds have started to take on a shallow neo-slab consistency. Quite nice turning conditions amidst conservative non-avy terrain sections (<30deg) in this circumscribed area, while avoiding convexities and steeper terrain along the flanks.
Comments
SS of 2" not enough, even with mod/strong winds, to create the straw to break the camel's back. More snow and transported load is needed to waken the PWL. Perhaps upper elev, with greater wind impacts would be more reactive. When combined with shallow HS the mid elevation turntable terrain is more obstacle dodging and monitoring the snowpack for the future.
