Problem #1 Comments
Even with the quite warm temperatures, the brisk winds were still finding snow to blow around along the high exposed ridge lines. I did not visit any high elevation windy terrain today, but I could easily observe the wind moving snow onto the leeward side of terrain that mainly was on the north side of the compass. Would say a moderate hazard for fresh wind drifted snow based on the winds today and more of the same tomorrow.
Comments
No observed red flags in my travels, I was mostly below 10,000' today and the warm weather kept the snow conditions damp and sticky, but I did not see any big wet snow issues, just a few roller balls coming off the rocks.
Pretty quiet at the trail head today, the weekend storm which put down 10-12" has settled out and melted some with the warm weather. Most folks are getting up the highway as far as they can before unloading machines. It looks like UDOT is no longer maintaining the highway on the north slope side.
Winds finding snow to blow around today, I did not notice the wind getting into much of the lower elevation terrain.
Although the snow pack is generally around two feet deep, more up higher, the conditions are looking good. I found some old late October snow near the ground that looked weak and sugary, but it was damp and I could make a snow ball with it.
The recent storms have started to fill in the rocky terrain, but safe travel is still limited.
