Comments
A few more inches of snow fell today during the day and made overall enjoyable riding conditions. Signs of wind drifted snow was obvious at upper elevations, where there were some signs of scouring and scalloped snow, but we had no signs of instability in the wind drifted snow where we traveled. No obvious cracking collapses or whomps.
The goal today was to try and look at multiple southwest-facing aspects above 10,000 feet to try to further investigate the PWL layer that gave us results in early January, and most recently on Mill B South. We dug in multiple locations, that both represented a shallower, wind drifted snowpack (80cm) as well a bit deeper, southwest-facing snowpack (140cm). In both locations, in multiple extended column tests, we were unable to get any results. When shoveling into the snowpack we were able to identify what we think is the deteriorating crust facet interface, but couldn't even get anything to pry off that layer in a shovel shear test.
Photo of riming on trees, and low visibility, and pit profile with ectx on SW aspect at 10350'.
