Snow Characteristics Comments
Perfect powder with a few inches of super low density snow on top. Hero skiing and easy trail breaking. We could still feel a crust under the new snow on south aspects. Low angle south aspects still skiing great.
Comments
Went for a walk along the PC ridgeline. Looked at the avalanche triggered yesterday. That was just new snow. Maybe it got a touch of wind or maybe a touch of sun to make the new snow into a soft slab. Not sure why that slope produced a soft slab avalanche when others didn't.
Dug on a NE aspect just north of Squaretop. About 1.5 meters of snow. Facets near the ground did not seem concerning.
The weakest snow was near Shale Shot which was the site of an avalanche fatality in January 2016. The snowpack was overall shallow and very soft. We sank into the snow when we stepped out of our skis much more on this slope than others (this is called boot penetration). Facets near the ground were very obvious and weak when we dug our snowpit which we did on belay. It took very hard hits on the shovel to get it to fracture which matches many other recent obs.
Moderate danger for north facing slopes above at least 9000 feet. Most likely places to tigger a slide would be very rocky places or places with a thin snowpack (less than a ski pole in depth). Low on most other slopes and great riding conditions.
