Comments
We planned to head up coal pit #4 (n-facing chute, starts out at about 6000ft) check out conditions, with a plan to turn back if we saw any red flags. Once we got out of the bushes and onto the apron we noticed debris from a significant avalanche (looked to be a wet slide), probably from sometime last week judging by the newer snow on top. We continued up the chute, noting old point releases. At about 6600ft (1/4 of the way up) we began to notice minor cracking and collapsing, and a quick hand pit revealed a 2-4cm (est) slab over about 90cm (est) of continuous graupel. I dug to the bed surface (the avalanche had taken most of the snowpack with it) only to find more graupel. Unsure whether or not this problem was isolated to lower in the chute because of graupel running downhill or If we’d find more once we got into more committing terrain, we turned around.
