Comments
Skinned up Flagstaff Shoulder around noon today. Light to moderate snow fall during the trip, seemed to increase later on. The existing snow was dense and had about an inch thick hard crust layer just under the fresh new snow. Could easily break the crust by stomping down hard most places.
New snow was about 4 inches at noon and it kept snowing pretty good. With wide skis you don't really break the crust skiing down so the snow was better than expected on the way back down the ridge.
My assessment is that at this elevation the snow is stable on the ridge/shoulder. There are still massive cornices around and I imagine with the relatively wet snow now coming down and the mild weather we have had the last few days, that it can get less stable than it has been.
