Comments
Traveled throughout Silver Fork and the biggest issue was sluffing in the new storm snow. This took a slope approaching 40 degrees in steepness to move, but we were able to trigger several sluffs, some of which ran 250-300' in distance, piling modest debris amounts on the uphill side of trees. These were not propagating at all, and only entraining the lower-density storm snow that fell overnight (~15 cms thick). Ski cuts at the top of slopes as well as steeper, mid-slope rollovers are a very effective mitigation tool for this problem.
Cornices are quite large, but are cantilevered on the slope, and appear to be in place for the time being. The tricky thing is finding a way around the cornices when you want to enter a slope below a corniced ridgeline.
For Monday, the two avalanche probles to be aware of:
- - continued sluffing in the loose storm snow on steep aspects;
- - wet activity.
While descending south-facing Emma's late in the afternoon back down to Alta we were able to ski cut steeper slopes where we could get a soft, damp slab to move, running on an old sun crust. The storm snow is relatively shallow - 25-30 cms thick - so any wet activity should not contain large amounts of snow, but could pile up in certain area such as the bottom of terrain traps.
Overall Low hazard, with a Moderate hazard on steep slopes where you could get sluffs to move.
