Poor Snowpack Structure
Comments
Went looking for a weak snowpack with a Level 2 Avalanche class today and found some fine specimens in the Monitors. In a 120 cm snowpack, we found well developed 4mm DH with about 35cm of 3mm FC on top of that. Neither of which are showing signs of rounding or being agreeable in any way. Notable test results: Four CTM SC down 85cm on 3mm facets. DTT's all resulted in sudden collapses as well. (3) ECT's didn't propagate, one did.
Despite the fact that parts of the PWL's in the central part of the range have 'healed' pretty well at this point, it's apparent that you can still find some reactive layers in the shallower snow. Picking the right terrain is still critical and will become even more critical if this 'atmospheric river' ever shows up.
Almost all of the SH had been laid down by the sun/warming/wind between 8,400- 10,000 feet. We didn't see a single wind slab to be concerned with. Cleary the forecasted wind didn't happen, which I was quite fine with. However, I wasn't so excited that the forecasted snow didn't verify. Hopefully it's coming in as I type...
