Comments
Went to South Monitor Bowl to ski the recently filled in bed surface from the slide which occurred on Friday, you could still make out the crown and flanks of the slide, and we decided it would be prudent to stay on the bed surface and not risk skiing on the side of the flank that didn’t slide. We dropped some cornices that only produced small soft slabs right of the ridge line. The upper hangfire was our biggest concern but once I ski cut the first 30ft of hangfire and dropped onto the bed surface I discovered I was on about 18 to 20 inches of light density powder on dirt and rocks with no facets at the bottom, the new snow was sluffing but not packing much of a punch. This is the only steep N facing line that I would consider skiing today because I knew it’s history. That being said there were multiple rocks hit in the top but not much chance of avalanching. Skiing old slide paths is a learned skill and not to be taken lightly, there are many things to consider while doing this such as hangfire risks, and management, and if the other part of the bowl avalanches will you be in its path and also was the week layer cleaned out with the old slide or is a repeater possible and so on.
