Forecast for the Skyline Area Mountains

The avalanche danger is generally LOW. There is a minor pockety MODERATE danger along west sides of the upper ridgelines where a person might find a small new wind slab that could crack out. These really don't pose much threat unless you are in very steep and exposed terrain where you might get knocked down and fall over rocks.

Weather and Snow

Ridgetop temperatures are around 30˚ F and the ridgetop wind is moderate in speed from the southeast. 2 to 3 inches of snow has fallen over the last 24 hours. This won't have changed the avalanche conditions a whole lot. Lower elevations and sunny facing slopes will be quite firm with a melt freeze crust. Soft snow could still be found on the more northerly facing slopes on Friday and the few inches that we picked up should improve riding conditions a bit.

About the only thing to talk about as far as avalanches is the minor possibility of finding a small fresh drift along the ridges that may crack out. One thing that should be noted is that the wind has been from the east so the drifts have formed on the opposite sides of the ridges compared to where the usually form from a more westerly prevailing wind.

Additional Information

We'll see cloudy skies with periods of snow later today. A few inches might accumulate. Wind will be in the moderate speed category from the southeast. Temperatures are going to remain mild in the low to mid 30s. Weather models are still indicating a decent shot of snow for our area tonight and into Sunday that might add anothe 8 inches of so. Temperatures will remain fairly mild on Sunday and the wind will shift more westerly.
