Forecast for the Skyline Area Mountains

The overall avalanche danger is MODERATE. There is a CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger in the lower elevations where the snow is saturated. Avoid steep terrain in the lower elevations especially any steep gullies where wet avalanches could pile up deep.. Rain on snow later today may enhance the chance for wet avalanches.

Special Announcements

Huntington Canyon is currently closed because avalanche debris is blocking the road. There is currently no estimated reopening time but most likely it will open again on Saturday.

Weather and Snow

Warm weather on Thursday made the snow very damp on all aspects up to at least 9500 feet. Overnight lows were insanely warm for this time of the season. Low temperatures at 10,000' were 38 degrees. Most mountain weather stations hovered around 40.

Recent Avalanches

A number of wet avalanches released naturally in Huntington Canyon on Thursday. They were all below 8000'. Continued warm temperatures and sun were what triggered them.

The warm temperatures also produced some cornice falls along the higher ridges.

Additional Information

A warm and windy storm is going to move through later today and tonight. Snow levels are going to be quite high to start, perhaps 9000 feet or a bit higher. Wind is going to be strong along the ridges. Temperatures cool into the mid 20s tonight. Weather models are advertising .6 to 1" of water. We could see 6 to 10 inches of snow by Saturday morning. The more northern end of the Skyline will probably see more snow than the southern end.
