After a few days of looking at very stable snowpacks in the Alta periphery, I took my Level 3 group into Days Fork with an objective of trying to find and map the possible locations of the persistent slab problem. We found it reactive on slopes at 8000' and evidence of it at 8500' but it was non-reactive. This ECT shows how surface hoar can remain reactive with moderate strength, high propagation propensity and poor structure 10-12 days after being buried.

Photos below:

1 & 2 - Surface hoar from buried layer that failed in video

3 & 4 - New surface hoar growing on most sheltered slopes we passed today

5 - NSF forming on upper elevation slopes
