Forecast for the Skyline Area Mountains

The avalanche danger will increase to CONSIDERABLE today if the storm actually produces snow as forecast. Natural avalanches are possible and human triggered avalanches are likely. Today is not a good day to play in avalanche terrain.

Weather and Snow

Not much snow has accumulated in the last 24 hours. Southwest wind is pretty gusty and temperatures are in the low to mid 20s.

We noted lots of fresh drifts and were experiencing cracking during the day on Sunday. These are two obvious signs of avalanche danger.

Recent Avalanches

There was one natural avalanche reported from Sunday. It was in the Electric Lake Bowl. It was around 200 feet wide and around 3 feet deep. The trigger was most likely wind drifting snow onto the slope. This bowl avalanched earlier in January. This is probably not indicative of the majority of the terrain out there since this path already avalanched once this season.

Weather models are still insisting that we will receive around an inch of water from this next storm moving through today. This translates to around a foot of snow on the high end. 6 to 10 inches seems more reasonable in most locations. Snowfall should be most intense mid day and into tonight. Southwest wind will continue in the moderate to strong category. Weather remains unsettled through mid week although not much snow accumulation is expected through that period.
