It was fun to be up there and watch the storm roll in over the Northen Wasatch. The wind was very much out of the SW and strong. Lots of blowing snow. I am not used to such an obvious wind direction usually the Northern Wasatch see very terrain domminated winds associated with fronts but I have never been up on Monte pre frontal.

Ok Riding conditions on most aspects. Anything on the S half of the compass was blown away. Anything on the N side of the compass especially the NE was riding really well anywhere from 4-6in of new snow since Monday.

With more snow on the way and fresh wind drifts from Tuesday morning snow we could see larger reactive Wind slabs in the Monte Cristo area and probably through out the Northern Wasatch.

Pretty decent riding conditions on the North side of the road today. Best riding was past the guard station headed toward Randolf on the N side of road found lots of fresh snow just not deep enough for face shots on the Sled though. There were lots of fresh wind slabs forming with the gusty SW winds today.

I have been noticing Cornice in the Forecast the past couple days so I thought I would check them out today. I have been very weary of them since the passing of a friend recently. I found them to be very reactive giving me more confidence in this side of the forecast. I was able to make a cornice fail just by walking behind it in boots no kicking or stomping (and I didn't have skis).

All in all old snow seems to have bonded well with the old snow surface in many places. The wind slabs are failing on the old melt freeze crust from the weekend of 3/20/2016.

On a personal Note: With the end of the season approaching I have been becoming ever so familiar with my surroundings. Maybe my S.A. (Situational Awareness is diminished). But I was caught off guard by a wind wale today somewhere where I was not expecting it. Flat light and the unsuspecting whale sent me over the bars. I now have a bruised ego and very bruised knees. This goes for me especially; I really enjoy traveling the mountains but traveling alone can have many other consequences than just avalanches. If I had been really been hurt it would have been a difficult place for extraction. I could have been there over night. Just remember to bring all the necessary things while traveling in the mountains. If I would of not had my pack because I did not intend to be in avalanche terrain I would not of had my shovel, water, and extra cloths. These are things I learned from today. Just as we move forward into spring remember that Normal caution in the mountains means still being prepared. [Forecaster Note - Good advice Kory! Hope the bruised knees heal soon.]
