Comments
We checked the snow conditions in the Northern Tony Grove area and found fairly good stability on North facing slopes. We dug pits at around 8600 feet elevation on a 34 degree NNW facing slope and found a total of 75 inches on the ground. There was 2 inches of good snow on top of a very thin rain crust then 16 more inches of dense snow. The only failures we observed were down about 12 inches on a grauple layer. We had several Q2 shovel shears at the new/old snow interface. It was difficult to tell what the failures were occurring on; I assume either NSF or buried surface hoar. The only compression test failure we observed was on 26 taps (6 from the shoulder) at 12 inches (on the grauple layer). The extended column test did not produce any significant results. We were surprised by the results. All the slides we observed were on East facing terrain (other than the 3-Feb-15 snowmobile triggered slide in by White Pine Lake). Riding was actually pretty good, if you enjoy smooth shallow powder conditions. The warmth had only affected the southern half of the compass snow and we found dry riding conditions on the northern half of the compass.
