Comments
We rode several areas around Tony Grove today and were surprised by the lack of large avalance activity. Other than some natural sluffing, and some minor sluffing while riding on steeper roll overs, we did not see any signs of instability. The clouds cleared around 11 and we got great views of Cornice Ridge, Magog, and Gog and no avalanches were noticed. The powder riding was very good with at least a foot of new snow on top of the firm December 20th storm snow. Althougth there is over 60 inches reported at Tony Grove, there are still many rocks near the surface and we tagged several rocks while riding and noticed snowmobilers that had hit rocks. People were being fairly cautious and were staying of major avalance areas. There were a few snowmobile tracks on the steep slopes at the south end of the lake. Snowmobilers had ridden along the steep ridgeline in lower beginner bowl without incident. There were snowmobile tracks in Miller bowl from the 24th. And several other small steep slopes had been ridden without producing any avalanches. When we got home we glassed the east mountains and did not see any recent avalanche activity other than some large sluffs under the cliff bands at the head of Birch Canyon. We enjoyed watching a group of skiers descend the Folley around 3:30 or 4 without any incident. It was a great day to be in the mountains.
