The fresh snow was inverted, or heavier and wind affected on top. You would sink deeply into the soft fresh snow. Travel difficult and slow in drifted terrain.

Significant cracking and collapsing in drifted areas. Cracks in stiff drifted snow as deep as 3 or 4 feet near ridge line, some propegating along the cornice line for up to around 100'

This was the obvious one today... Triggered wind slabs in the 2 to 3 foot deep range appeared likely on drifted slopes.
