The southeast aspects were filled in nicely though, when the sun popped out, the snow quality quickly deteriorated. The new snow became heavy and saturated.
I triggered a small pocket (8" deep 25" wide) on a steep rollover just as Evelyn had predicted....picture below.
"If the sun does pop out where you are, the new snow could become damp and sensitive on steep, sunny slopes, and sluffs easily triggered." (SLC avalanche advisory March 23)
Later in the day we traveled to more northerly facing terrain and found deep, cold powder. We witnessed cracking within the new snow on steep slopes but the slabs were not cohesive and seemed content to travel sluggishly for a short distance.
