In all the areas I went today, the danger was low but I did not get into the wet conditions in the sun or the wind slabs up high along the ridges.
The clear skies have taken their toll on the shady aspects as the snowpack continues to rot away into loose near-surface faceted snow. In the shallow snowpack areas I was sometimes sinking to the ground in bottomless faceted snow, especially in the thick north facing trees. It's not dangerous now because there's no slab on top and because of the faceting process, there is no energy in the snowpack. Most slopes are tracked up and people have been getting away with many bold lines.
But with the series of storms approaching, things are going to change. The faceted snow on the northerly facing slopes are going to be a problem for the rest of the month after they get a significant load on top of them. I don't like the looks of it. Trouble coming....
