Poor Snowpack Structure
Red Flags Comments
Two layers of concern. The upper layering of concern is well preserved surface hoar beneath a thin rime crust. It doesn't seem active at the moment, perhaps because the new snow above it seems to lack weight and/or slab characteristics. ECT - full propegation, on 2 to 4 taps in numerous pits. Q2, though might be a Q1 on a steeper slope. This layering was widespread through out the area we traveled and mostly consistent. The other layers of concern were several facet/crust sandwiches near the ground, one of which also had preserved surface hoar. Very hard to get to fail in ECT - (ECTP25 to 31, sometimes no failure), but when it did fail, a clean Q2. This layering had more variation across the terrain.
