YOUTH AVALANCHE LEVEL 1 CLASS
Could there be a better gift to give the young ones in your life during this Holiday season?
Youth Level 1 Avalanche Courses: Learn safe travel in avalanche terrain and recognition of weather, snow pack and terrain factors contributing to avalanche hazard. Dig snow pits and perform field tests to recognize weak and strong layers in snow pack and practice efficient rescue with avalanche beacons. No previous avalanche education necessary.
Description: This 24-hour course is sanctioned by the American Avalanche Association, and students will receive a nationally recognized certificate upon completion. It is designed for those with or without previous avalanche education or experience, seeking a comprehensive and structured course. The schedule includes a mix of field sessions and lectures. The graduate of this course will understand the basics of snow science, stability evaluation, safe travel, and rescue, and be ready to make informed decisions in avalanche terrain.
This particular class was initially conceived to offer avalanche education for any youth (13 years and up) that were participating in any one of the Freeride Programs being offered in the Greater Salt Lake area. Though, any youth with a desire to further their foundation in the fundamentals of avalanche education is welcome to enroll. We will cover the basics of avalanche hazard awareness and stability assessment. The course will be 40 percent classroom based and 60 field based. We will travel in the backcountry, in and around avalanche terrain. The coordinating educator in charge of this class has over 10 years experience designing and implementing educational opportunities for adolescents; and he has been a guide/educator/forecaster in the Greater Salt Lake area for more than 15 years.
