Forecast for the Logan Area Mountains

There is a LOW danger today, and avalanches are generally unlikely in the backcountry. The snow is mostly stable, but you still might trigger isolated old wind slabs or loose surface sluffs on very steep upper elevation slopes. Only commit one person at a time to a slope, check your avalanche rescue equipment, and find the time to practice avalanche rescue scenarios with your partners....

Weather and Snow

The Tony Grove Snotel reports 15 inches of total snow, and it's 37 degrees at 8400' . You'll find a wide variety of snow conditions above around 8000', including wind and sun crusts and soft re-crystallized powder-like snow. But, you should try to stay on slopes with smooth underlying ground where there is enough snow, and the pick'ns are pretty slim these days.

The Tony Grove Road is not maintained for winter travel and is very slick and icy on shady sections.. Be sure you are prepared with shovels and other emergency supplies if you attempt the drive. It is still quite possible to drive up to the lake, and this is where most people are parking. It's still a bit shallow for me to ride my sled in the backcountry, but a few folks have been able to get out to test their rides... Several riders made it out onto Cornice Ridge over the weekend, with no avalanches but some equipment damage noted...

There is certainly more risk of hitting rocks or other buried hazards currently, than getting caught in an avalanche. Potential for triggering fresh wind slabs exists in some isolated and exposed upper elevation north and east facing terrain... Some of these slabs may be sensitive to your weight and run on very steep slopes. Loose snow sluffs are also becoming more possible in steep terrain,.and there is an isolated chance that you could trigger an old wind slab on a very steep upper elevation slope.

High pressure will continue through today, with mild daytime temperatures in the mountains and a fair amount of sunshine expected. The high pressure system will be forced off to the east today and a pattern shift looks to be in the works... A mild and moist southwest flow will set up over the region with cloud cover and south winds increasing this afternoon. A shortwave through will pass mainly north of the region tonight, but a period of strong winds and snow showers is likely in the mountains, with little accumulation expected. Expect a bit more sunshine tomorrow, with mountain high temperatures around 40 degrees and a moderate southwest wind along the ridges. Another small shot of snow is likely Friday afternoon and night, but accumulations will be on the light side. A more promising system will impact the region on around Sunday, with significant accumulations possible....
