Forecast for the Logan Area Mountains

The backcountry avalanche danger is MODERATE today, and you could trigger soft wind slab avalanches on steep upper elevation slopes with preexisting snow. Use elevated caution on steep drifted slopes, especially those facing the northern half of the compass.

Weather and Snow

The Tony Grove Snotel reports several inches of new snow from late yesterday and overnight, and you'll find nicely refreshed powder conditions and still very shallow early season snow cover. You'll be able to find turning options on some northerly facing upper elevation slopes with smooth underlying ground, but keep the speed down and watch for shallowly buried rocks and stumps.

Be sure to check your batteries and the working condition of your rescue equipment, and follow safe travel protocols.... Remember that upper elevation Forest roads including the Tony Grove Road are not maintained for winter travel and are likely to present challenges... Be sure you are prepared with shovels and other emergency supplies.

Recent Avalanches

No avalanches have been reported yet in the Logan Area, but we have reports of several in the Central Wasatch Range over the weekend.... These may not have been big enough to deeply bury a person, but certainly could have dragged you violently through rocks on very shallow bed surfaces..

Additional Information

The National Weather Service is continuing a Winter Storm Warning for most of the Utah mountains until 11:00 this morning, as the storm system gradually moves off to the east. Expect cold and breezy conditions in the mountains today, with high temperatures and wind speeds in the teens. A weak storm will graze the mountains of far northern Utah tomorrow afternoon through Tuesday, bringing a chance for a few more snowflakes. A dirty high pressure system will move in and temperatures will gradually rise for much of the remainder of the week.....
