If, as they say, that a picture is worth a thousand words; what to make, then, of moving pictures or film?
If you're gonna tell a story, and if you want it to have a meaningful impact, it's important to establish an emotional connection with your audience and to take ideas that may seem esoteric and bring them to the stage. In the avalanche world, UAC forecaster Trent Meisenheimer is at the forefront of storytelling and communication through the use of video. Trent uses high-def cameras, drones, and cutting-edge video software to communicate the visceral realities of a field day in avalanche terrain or a recent avalanche accident. He's also the wunderkind director of longer, higher budget productions such as the award winning Know Before You Go video (Banff film festival finalist), To Hell in a Heartbeat--you can watch both of those below--and many others.
In this podcast, we sit down with Trent to talk about the art of storytelling through film...and he even offers a few tips and tricks to the budding videographer.
Trent Meisenheimer grew up in Salt Lake City Utah, skiing and snowboarding in the Wasatch mountains since the age of two. He currently works as an avalanche forecaster for the Central Wasatch Mountains, as well as an avalanche education specialist. He also produces and edits lots of the high quality UAC videos such as Know Before You Go. Although busy with work, he is pursuing a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah. With a passion for avalanches much of his time in the winter months is devoted to forecasting and teaching avalanche education and outreach programs. In the summer months you can find him hanging from a rock wall or kayaking down one of the many scenic rivers in the western U.S.
