Most of the terrain has a LOW avalanche danger. The danger may rise to MODERATE if the wind increases enough to drift snow. Avoid steep slopes where snow is getting deposited. Anticipate the danger to increase on Monday due to stronger wind speeds.

Please join us at Big Pine Sports for an avalanche presentation on Dec 16th at 6:30pm. I will be talking about the current conditions and sharing tips on how to stay out of avalanches. I'll cover anything else the audience is interested in.

Weather and Snow

After bottoming out at 5 degrees around midnight, temperatures have been increasing and are now in the low teens. Skies are clear. The wind is from the northwest and is light until you get into the very highest terrain where it's moderate in speed. The snow surface still consists of dry powder on most aspects.

Description

The only factor that might increase the avalanche danger slightly today is the wind. It seems like it will stay in check during the day today but will increase overnight. Keep an eye on what's going on along the higher ridges and peaks. Watch for any drifting snow and avoid the areas where it is being deposited.

Additional Information

We should see partly cloudy skies with increasing clouds as the day progresses. Ridgetop temperatures are going to reach near 30. Ridgetop winds should remain light to moderate in speed during the day and increase tonight. The direction will be from the northwest. We have a number of small storms moving through this week. One tonight into Monday, one Tuesday into Wednesday and one toward the end of the week. None of them look all that impressive but hopefully we'll pick up a few inches of snow out of each one. The last storm of the week looks the most promising to me right now.
