current conditions Wow... what a great storm for the eastern front and a good valley detox to boot! At times yesterday it was snowing over 3" inches an hour, and that quickly stacked up to nearly 15" of snow with just over an inch of water. Other than a slight mid day bump in the winds, the snow fell straight out of the sky. The storm snow is deep, cold, and light. Yep... it's over the hood and over the head. Click here for real-time temperatures, snowfall, and winds.

recent activity Yesterday's new snow was very manageable, sluffing with slope cuts on steep slopes. |

description
A lot of snow, not much water, and hardly any wind equates to an epic day in the mountains. Today's avalanche hazard revolves around two very different avalanche dragons. First, the new storm snow is mostly manageable, predictably breaking at or below your skis, board, or sled and there's plenty of terrain with green light conditions. Less manageable are avalanches that break deeper than you might expect. Terrain with a weak, shallow snowpack or slopes that avalanched during the Solstice storm are prime suspects. Generally these are slopes facing North, Northeast, and East and at mid and upper elevations.

weather Snow showers taper off this morning as winds veer to the north and east, blowing 10-20 mph along the high ridges. High temperatures rise into the mid 20's before dipping into the teens overnight. High pressure builds for the rest of the week giving us clear skies and warming temperatures. A few flurries for late in the weekend... otherwise quiet weather. |
