Good morning, this is Craig Gordon
with the Forest Service Utah Avalanche Center with a special avalanche and mountain
weather advisory for the western Uinta Mountains. Today Friday,
December 10, 2004 and it’s 7:30 a.m.
Announcements:
We have installed a weather
station in the Moffit Peak area. Click here to
see temperatures and wind data.
Many thanks go out to the
Utah Snowmobile Association and BRORA for their generous contributions.
Avalanche Conditions:
Strong winds, heavy snow, and rapidly rising
temperatures have prompted me to issue another special avalanche advisory
today. An AVALANCHE WARNING remains in effect for the western Uinta
Mountains. Avalanches are occurring at elevations as low as 6,000’ in addition
to the typical higher elevation terrain. People without well-developed rescue
and travel skills should avoid backcountry travel today.
Bottom Line:
The avalanche danger is HIGH today on all steep slopes with recent deposits of
wind-drifted snow. Both human triggered and natural avalanches are likely.
Mountain Weather:
High pressure is
beginning to build and skies are clearing. Winds are dying down and are generally
out of the north at speeds of 10-20 mph along the ridges. Storm totals are
close to 3’ with about 2.5” of water. In the past 24 hours temperatures have risen
10 degrees. At 10,000’ it’s in the upper 20’s and at 8,000’ in the low 30’s.Today
we can expect highs in the lower 40’s. Saturday will be warm and breezy. The
next shot of snow should move into the region on Monday.
