Avalanche Advisory
Advisory: Skyline Area Mountains Issued by Brett Kobernik for Sunday - March 5, 2017 - 6:44am
bottom line

The overall avalanche danger remains generally LOW. The only real danger is the minor chance for triggering a small fresh drift along the highest and steepest ridgelines. Anticipate the danger to increase on Monday during the next storm.

current conditions

Riding conditions on Saturday remained decent and the snowpack was generally stable. Overnight mountain temperatures were in the upper 20s and the ridgetop wind was generally light from the southwest.

description

Small fresh wind slabs will be the only minor concern for backcountry travel today. Most of the old drifts and slabs are cemented in place. The increased wind today may create some minor fresh drifts. Things are generally pretty safe out there right now but it's easy to get complacent and let your guard down. Continue to analyze the terrain as you move through the mountains looking for any signs of fresh drifts on steep slopes.

weather

Wind will increase mid day today from the southwest and might get quite strong ahead of an intense cold snow storm that will move through tonight and Monday. Ridgetop temperatures today will get into the mid 40s and we'll see increasing clouds and the chance for snow. The real snowfall doesn't get going until tonight when the cold front moves through. Wind will veer to the northwest and remain fairly gusty tonight. We'll see snow and moderate to strong west wind on Monday then the storm starts winding down later. 6 to 10" of new snow is anticipated.
