Avalanche Advisory
Advisory: Skyline Area Mountains Issued by Brett Kobernik for Monday - November 28, 2016 - 7:21am
bottom line

The avalanche danger is generally MODERATE but may increase to CONSIDERABLE during the day if we receive the high end of expected new snowfall amounts. Avoid the steeper slopes in the higher terrain today while the snow stacks up and the wind blows it around.

current conditions

Some snow over the last week and some more to come makes it look like this might be the start of the winter season. Earlier in the week a couple of smaller storms added a little snowfall. Over the past 24 hours we've picked up 5 to 10 inches of snow. The total snow depth in the higher terrain is 10 to 20 inches. Temperatures are in the upper teens this morning. The wind has been strong at times but seems to have let up somewhat this morning. It's been from the southwest.

recent activity

We have not been into the high country since this most recent storm started so there isn't much information about any recent avalanche activity. My guess is that there may have been a few small natural avalanches when it was snowing and blowing yesterday. We'll start prowling around more today to gather some information.

description

The new snow expected today coupled with the wind may create an unstable situation in the higher terrain. It's wise to avoid the steep slopes in the higher terrain during the day while the storm moves through.

weather

The current storm is going to last through today and start to exit our area Tuesday morning. I'm thinking we should see another 6 to 10 inches of snow. More is possible. Temperatures will be in the teens along the ridgetops and the wind will switch to the northwest and increase in speed.

For the long term, it looks like a fairly active weather pattern with a number of potential storms that could give us some more snow.
