bottom line

The avalanche danger is HIGH today in the upper elevation terrain that faces northwest, through east. Human triggered avalanches are almost certain. Stay clear of the bottom of any steep slopes where an avalanche may come down from above. Those without expert level avalanche skills should consider staying out of the mountains today.

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS TRANSMITTED AT THE REQUEST OF THE FOREST SERVICE UTAH AVALANCHE CENTER. THE FOREST SERVICE UTAH AVALANCHE CENTER IN SALT LAKE CITY HAS CONTINUED A BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WARNING.

* TIMING...IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM MST THIS MORNING TO 6 AM MST WEDNESDAY.

* AFFECTED AREA...FOR THE MOUNTAINS OF NORTHERN UTAH INCLUDING THE WASATCH RANGE NEAR OGDEN, SALT LAKE CITY, AND PROVO AS WELL AS THE MANTI SKYLINE AND WASATCH PLATEAU.

* AVALANCHE DANGER...THE AVALANCHE DANGER FOR THE WARNING AREA WILL BE HIGH TODAY. * IMPACTS...HEAVY SNOWFALL ON A WEAK SNOWPACK AND WIND DRIFTING HAVE CREATED WIDESPREAD AREAS OF UNSTABLE SNOW. TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS NOT RECOMMENDED. STAY OFF OF AND OUT FROM UNDER SLOPES STEEPER THAN 30 DEGREES.

current conditions

The storm has produced 1.5 to 2 feet of snow in the higher terrain along the Skyline so far. It contains about an inch of water or a bit more. Wind speeds increased late yesterday with gusts near 30. We are still seeing gusts in the 20s this morning. Temperatures are in the low teens at 9500'.

All of the snow from November has become very weak, especially in the higher terrain. It will not be able to support much new snow before it collapses and causes avalanches.
