Danger Rose Tutorial

There is a MODERATE (Level 2) danger of wet sluffs on steep slopes with wet snow.

CURRENT CONDITIONS

The snow is wet. There was only a marginal refreeze last night. With mostly cloudy skies today with rain light rain below about 9,000', hmmmmm.

RECENT ACTIVITY

I did not hear about any activity from the backcountry yesterday. I was not able to get out either. There were no observations sent to me. Is anybody out there?

THREAT #1

WHERE PROBABILITY SIZE TREND
      Over the next 24 hours.

Today the main concern will again be wet avalanches. With little to no refreeze overnight and some light rain falling below 9,000' the snow will remain soggy and you may continue to see some wet sluffs especially on lower elevation terrain. I'm not expecting much activity because the snow has been wet for the last 2-3 days, which is kind of a been-there-done-that situation. But in some cases, extended periods without a freeze can trigger deeper slabs, so be aware.

As usual, avoid steep slopes that are getting soggy.

MOUNTAIN WEATHER

Today seems like it will be a gloomy day with mostly cloudy skies, warm and occasional light rain falling up to around 9,000' and light snow above that elevation. Temperatures along the ridge tops should be around 40 degrees with 8,000' temperatures 45-50. More of the same overnight and then the cold air will push in on Monday, bringing perhaps 8 inches of snow. Check out the Cottonwood Canyons forecast for more details.

Extended forecast is for continued unsettled weather for most of the week.
