Danger Rose Tutorial

The Bottom Line for today will be an avalanche danger of Considerable at and above treeline for wind slabs on slopes greater than 35 degrees. Evaluate slopes for both cross loaded and top loaded wind slabs.

CURRENT CONDITIONS

Strong winds and warm temperatures are affecting southeast Utah this morning. Camp Jackson's temperatures have been above freezing throughout the night and the Geyser Pass TH is already at 27 degrees F. Westerly winds have been punishing above tree line locations for the last 24 hours...wind averages have been around 20 mph.

The roads to all of the trail heads have been plowed and are in great shape. LUNA volunteer Matt Hebberd groomed the entire track on Tuesday, February 21st.

There will be some decent powder conditions in wind sheltered locations at and below tree line.

RECENT ACTIVITY

Almost every avalanche path had some sort of activity, in mostly loose sluff avalanches, the President's Weekend storm. These loose snow avalanches terminated in the track of these paths, and very few reached the run out zone.

THREAT #1

WHERE PROBABILITY SIZE TREND
      Over the next 24 hours.

Above tree line locations will be very tricky to navigate due to the top loading and cross loaded wind deposits in the alpine. Wind slabs will be most reactive where they are thinnest and a skier or snowmobiles weight can transfer their energy into the weak layer below.
