Moab Avalanche Advisory

Forecaster: Max Forgensi

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

The snow is starting to fly in the La Sal and Abajo Mountains! The 2011-2012 season has begun...three winter storms have affected the region since Columbus Day Holiday.

The Utah Avalanche Center-Moab will officially open its doors on Monday, December 5th 2011. Avalanche advisories will be issued three times a week through the beginning of April. Dave Medara has moved on for the time being and Max Forgensi will be back as the primary forecaster for this season.

Currently 10" of snow blankets the Geyser Pass Winter Trailhead (9600') and its time to start thinking of traveling safely in avalanche terrain. The current snow on the ground will more than likely be the weak layer for subsequent storms and wind events. It is time to replace the batteries in your beacon and review how to effectively use your beacons, probes and shovels. Until regular advisories are posted, please check the SNOTEL sites in the La Sal and Abajo mountains before heading out.

The Utah Avalanche Center-Moab will be hosting a basic avalanche awareness and AIARE Level I avalanche class this season, dates to be determined. Please call (435) 636-3335 if you are interested in taking one of these classes.

Let's look forward to another safe and fun winter season in the mountains of southeast Utah!
