current conditions The productive storm earlier in the week hit northern Utah hard, with 42 inches of snow reported at Powder Mountain, 30" at Monte Cristo, and 20" at Ben Lomond. It looks as though this storm favored the southern part of the Logan Zone, but The Tony Grove Snotel reports a solid 12 inches of fresh snow, and a few folks are getting out on upper elevation slopes with smooth, grassy underlying ground. The avalanche danger is low since the fresh snow fell directly on the rocks and weak layers have yet to develop, but sluffing is possible on steep slopes and stiffer wind slabs will form in wind exposed terrain. The early snow is a mixed blessing, bringing excitement for the upcoming season, a few possible early turns, and a developing base. But, it'll also likely be the source of future stability problems since the shallow snow cover will be subject to facet development as an intensifying temperature gradient drives sublimation under cold clear nights of a building high pressure system. |
