Powderkeg Clinic: Avalanche Choices – Choosing Terrain Based on Conditions

The Utah Avalanche Center and Wasatch Powderkeg are teaming up to present Avalanche Choices – Choosing Terrain Based on Conditions.  This will be a 3 hour clinic in the Brighton backcountry starting at 9 am to improve your uphill and downhill route selection to maximize your fun and safety.  For more information on the Powderkeg event, go here

You can't choose your weather or your snowpack, but you can choose who you travel with and how you travel.  This clinic will allow you to get out with more confidence.

We can get out in the backcounty any time, regardless of conditions, and have fun in relative safety.  The key is to understand the current conditions and set our objectives and tactics to match. We'll discuss the avalanche hazard in effect that day, set some group objectives, and head out to practice our route-finding skills; working on safe and effective up-track placement, identifying terrain to avoid, managing group dynamics, and practicing strategies for staying safe and watching out for one another on the descent.

Requirements & Logistics

We will provide a single chair ride to gain elevation quickly, but uphill travel is required and you must have skis or a splitboard capable of uphill travel and skins.  You will need a beacon, probe, and shovel.  You must have the fitness and riding ability to climb and descend in steep, ungroomed terrain for 3 hours and be familiar with your equipment - this is an intermediate level backcountry class and is not suitable for those brand new to the backcountry.

This clinic will be held in the backcountry regardless of weather, so bring a pack with warm clothes, first aid and repair materials, and food and water to get you through the afternoon.

Plan to arrive and check in by 8:45am.  We'll meet up at 9:00 am and will return about 12:00 pm

Cancellation policy: Our classes generally fill up.  If you can't attend the class, please let us know by 5pm Friday afternoon the week before class for a full refund.  If you cancel after that but more than 24 hours before the evening class, we'll refund all but $50 of your fee. After 6 pm the day before class, there will be no refund.
