THANK YOU... THANK YOU... THANK YOU!!!

From me... to you. Huge thanks to all our amazing sponsors and of course, to everyone who attended last weekends 10th annual Utah Snow and Avalanche Workshop (USAW). With over 900 people attending, USAW was the largest regional workshop in the country... nice work y'all!

Jimmy Tart seen above, delivers his riveting presentation "The Dogma of Avalanche Forecasts" to a sea of avalanche professionals, high-end recreationists, and the backcountry curious.

In addition, nearly 100 riders sat in on the first ever sled specific breakout session. Kim Reid pictured above, gave a heart wrenching presentation about the loss of his good friend Dave "Animal" Johnson who was killed in a tragic avalanche accident on Jan. 8, 2005 on the Manti-Skyline.

Weather and Snow

Ted's been in Whitney Basin checking on one of our remote snow sites and found connected snow on shady, north facing slopes in the Superbowl. Looks like he was able to punch out a tight stich as well :)

While Toby sent these overview pics of Moffit Basin, clearly illustrating the same theme.

A closer look reveals a shallow and slightly layered snowpack.

Of course we're stoked seeing early season snow, but in the same breath.... I'm sorta hoping it melts away. It's not because I wanna be in the office plugging away at computer projects, it's because early season snow always becomes weak and faceted, and can produce avalanches months later that break at the ground.

General Announcements

I'll be issuing regularly scheduled advisories once the snow starts flying in earnest. In the meantime, if you're getting out and about, please let me know what you're seeing especially if you see or trigger and avalanche. I can be reached at [email protected] or 801-231-2170

It's also a good time to set up one of our very popular avalanche awareness classes. Reach out to me and I'll make it happen.
