Forecast for the Skyline Area Mountains

Issued by Brett Kobernik for
Sunday, November 29, 2015

The avalanche danger is LOW today. Wind speeds should stay low but watch for any drifting if they become more gusty than forecast. The light powder on the surface could get blown into sensitive drifts.

Weather and Snow

We've seen light snow showers over the last 24 hours but it really hasn't added any significant accumulation. Temperatures are slightly colder than yesterday morning. We're seeing a number of stations dipping into the single digits. Winds are generally calm.

Description

The thin snowcover really limits where you can travel right now. However, there is plenty to scoot around on many of the Forest Service roads in the higher terrain. Folks are not getting onto the steeper avalanche prone slopes right now and even if they were, the avalanche danger is quite low.

The snow from earlier in November has changed into a loose sugary type of snow grain we refer to as 'faceted snow'. This faceted snow near the ground could act as a weak layer once it's buried deeper by future storms. There are more details in my observation from my field work in Seeley on Saturday:

Additional Information

We'll see clouds and cold temperatures today. Highs will be in the mid teens along the ridges. The current storm is moving east and will produce one more shot of snow afternoon today with maybe a couple of inches of accumulation. The flow starts to shift more northwest today and wind speeds should stay fairly light. We move into high pressure for the upcoming week.
