Forecast for the Logan Area Mountains

Give thanks for some snow! Expect very shallow early season snow cover in the backcountry, with hitting rocks probably more of a concern than potential avalanche danger. Small wind slab avalanches could be possible at the highest elevations on smooth north facing slopes with preexisting snow.

Weather and Snow

I'm reading about 5 inches of new snow at the USU Doc Daniel Snotel, and perhaps 7" at Franklin Basin ID. West northwest winds diminished into the single digits overnight, but averaged close to 30 mph for a couple hours around dinner time. It's 12 degrees this morning at 9700' on Logan Peak.

Remember, the Tony Grove Road is a busy shared use area and it's not maintained for driving in the winter, so be prepaired with shovel and winter survival gear...

The early season is a great time to refresh yourself and practice companion rescue techniques with your partners.

Recent Avalanches

No avalanches were reported locally, but a skier triggered avalanche occurred on Tuesday afternoon in very steep north facing terrain at the closed Alta Ski Area....

Although still mostly unlikely, small wind slab avalanches may be possible on isolated north facing smooth slopes at the highest elevations.

Additional Information

High pressure will bring a dry and stable airmass to the area today. A mild southwest flow will spread over the region Friday through Saturday before a more active weather pattern develops Saturday night through the early part of next week.
